The UPSC Civil Services
Mains exam tests candidates’ ability to judge, pattern of thinking, level of
maturity, analytical capacity, depth of thinking and overall intellectual
strength. The UPSC aims to select a well-thought and well- reasoned candidate
through this exam. This is the reason why UPSC has designed an exhaustive and
elaborative syllabus for the Mains examination. Only candidates with endurance,
dedication, perseverance and intellectual strength will be able to ace through
this exam.
UPSC Mains Examination
Pattern For 2018
The UPSC has revised its
syllabus and pattern of civil services mains exam in the year 2016.
- As
per the revised pattern there will be total
9 papers in this examination. Questions
in all 9 papers are descriptive
type. It means a student is required to write answers for every
question in the given word limit.
- There
are four papers in the General
Studies. Each paper of General Study carries 250 marks. Together the
General Studies papers is of 1000 marks. All papers are compulsory in
nature.
- Besides
there are 2 language papers of 300
marks each. The marks of the language papers are not counted while
preparing the grand total marks of the candidate. One language paper is English while another language paper can be selected from the list of
languages prescribed in the 8th schedule of the constitution.
- Out
of the given list of subjects a candidate is required to select one subject as the optional subject.
Each optional subject consists of two papers, each of 300 marks. The total
marks of the optional subject is 600. A student can select any literature
subject from the given list, even if he or she has not done graduation in
the selected subject.
- Those
candidates who qualify the Mains examination are further given call for
the interview. The total marks of the interview is 275. A candidate is
given freedom to select any language prescribed in the 8th schedule of the
constitution to select his medium of interview. It is the responsibility
of the UPSC to make an arrangement of the translator for the interview.
